quite a portion of the public feels that taking a cab is expensive. yes i agree. its kinda heart pain to pay ten over dollars just on a cab ride which will only cost you a dollar plus if you take mrt or bus. tats the reason i try not to take a cab whenever i can, except that i'm realli late for an important appointment or else i'll try not to overspend on transport. one china national being interviewed mentioned that taking a cab in singapore is so much more expensive than she does in shanghai. what is worst to her is that the service here is not much better than in shaghai to command such a high fare. another local share the same view as her. he feels that the taxi companies are overcharging by adding in more extras during peak hours and etc...
well... i do agree again that taking a cab is expensive. however, have they thought of what will happen if cab fare is as low as bus or mrt fares? the first thing i can confirm is mrt and bus companies will close down! will you want to take a bus or mrt if you can take cab at the same price? which dumb ass won't do that? i'll be the first to throw my ez-link card away (no need to return me my balance) and i'll happily take cab from now onwards. i bet these people never know anything about economics. in a simple demand-supply model, the qty demanded is inversely proportional to price, ie price fall demand increase and vice versa. singaporeans, famous in complaining, have been complaining (again..) that cabs are not enough during peak hours (or in another words, not enough when they want one). so thats the reason cabby companies need to have surcharge to "advice" those who realli need not take a cab during peak hours to "hold back" to non-peak hours so that others who are in need of it more and dun mind paying slightly more to take the cab first. also that little bit of surcharge is not realli alot. how much more can a cabby earn from that $1 or $2 for that 2-3 hours? dun forget the demand for cabs usually is in town area. so imagine if u take a cab from orchard to your home, lets say in pasir ris, the cabby may have to go back to town empty handed so as to get another customer, hence at most he only earns $1+$1 more during that 2 hours, but have to waste the time to go back town empty handed. who is going to compensate them for that? it may not be even enough to cover his fuel cost back! we human have a regular pattern when doing things, so of coz the demand for a cab will be high before office hours and after office hours. if you have the time go and look in the streets during non-peak hours. look at the number of empty cabs. its scary! who is paying those cabbies during those hours? no one! so how can you say that there are not enough cabs? you going to pay the cabbies during the time of non-peak hours for their loss? if you are then i strongly believe the taxi companies will gladly introduce more cabbies on the road..
another thing is cabbies have no CPF. what you pay them for the fare is what they bring home to feed their families. that also means that they do not have any $$$ for retirement if they do not have enough to save for their retirement after feeding their families. also they do not have public holidays and double pay or 1.5x the rate when working overtime. its purely for their livehood they have to do that. who dun wish to spend more time with their familes during public holidays? who want to work during that time w/o extra pay? but cabbies have to... that is because its the time they can hope for more passengers so that they can earn that extra few dollars... what about maintenance? the cabbies have to pay them as well! so come on people... think in their shoes... its realli not that much that they earn. well, my daddy is a cabby, so i'm in the best position to speak for them..
ok.. if you feel that everything is expensive, cab expensive, bus expensive, train expensive... then go ahead walk home after your mid night show all the way from orchard to jurong! or if train is expensive then walk your way home from jurong to woodlands after your school or work... only then you will understand paying a dollar plus for a ride is such a blissful thing than walking 4 hours home...
even hammie and his gf pledge their love for zashutiao by volunteering for the photo taking! *munch munch munch* =D~~
